10 Study Tips That Actually Work

Skip the generic advice. These 10 study tips are backed by how memory and focus actually work, not just what sounds good.

Most study advice you hear is either too vague ("just focus more") or too generic to actually change anything. Here are 10 study tips that are backed by how memory and attention actually work, used by students who improved their grades without doubling their study hours.

1. Use active recall, not re-reading Re-reading notes feels productive but barely helps retention. Close the book and try to write down everything you remember about a topic, then check what you missed. This single change improves retention more than almost anything else on this list.

2. Space your revision out Cramming the night before fades fast. Reviewing a topic after one day, then three days, then a week (spaced repetition) moves information into long-term memory instead of short-term memory that disappears after the test.

3. Study in focused blocks, not marathon sessions A focused 40-50 minute block with a real break beats three unfocused hours. Put your phone in another room during the block, not just on silent.

4. Test yourself with past papers Past papers reveal exactly how examiners phrase questions and how marks are actually awarded, which is often different from how a topic is explained in a textbook.

5. Teach it to someone else Explaining a topic out loud, even to an empty room, exposes gaps in understanding that re-reading never will. If you cannot explain it simply, you do not know it yet.

6. Interleave your subjects Instead of studying one subject for a full day, mix two or three related topics in a single session. It feels harder in the moment but builds stronger, more flexible understanding.

7. Sleep before you cram Memory consolidation happens during sleep. An all-nighter before an exam often performs worse than a shorter study session followed by real sleep.

8. Write summaries in your own words Copying notes word-for-word barely engages your brain. Rewriting a concept in your own simpler words forces you to actually process it.

9. Remove decision fatigue Decide what you are studying and when, the night before, so you are not wasting willpower deciding where to start every time you sit down.

10. Review mistakes, not just answers When you get a practice question wrong, spend more time understanding why than moving to the next question. The mistake is usually more informative than the questions you got right.

You do not need all 10 at once. Pick two or three that feel most realistic for your current routine, and add more once they become habits.

GoharOnline's tutors help students build these habits alongside subject teaching, both online and in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Get in touch with GoharOnline to talk through a study routine that fits your schedule.
